How to start a crackers shop for Diwali
A seasonal cracker stall can pay back in three weeks, if the licence is in place and the stock mix is right.
1. Get the licence first
Selling fireworks needs a licence under the Explosives Rules, 2008. For a Diwali stall this is usually a temporary licence issued by the District Collector or the Commissioner of Police. Apply one to two months before Diwali. Offices get busy in the last few weeks, and you cannot legally store stock without it.
2. Choose the location
- A ground-floor, open-front space with easy exits.
- Away from petrol pumps, gas godowns and hospitals.
- A spot where families already shop during the festival week.
3. Size your stock
Our minimum order is ₹2.5 lakh, so first-time stalls often buy together with two or three other shops. Start with the fast movers: sparklers, flower pots, chakkars and sound crackers make up about half the value. Add walas, a few sky shots and multi-shot cakes for the bigger bills. 4. Order early
Order in August or September. In the last four weeks before Diwali, transport slots fill and popular items run short.
5. Set up for safety
- Keep sand and water buckets and a fire extinguisher at the stall.
- Never demonstrate or light crackers at the shop.
- Stack cartons off the floor, away from lights and heaters.
